Have you got a memorable slogan?
Nailing your slogan is not an easy task. Nor is it one that should be taken lightly. Your slogan is something that sells you, telling potential customers your values, what you’re about and what you could offer them in a short, succinct phrase. This sounds like a lot of pressure, and I’m afraid to say it is. But do not worry, this post is here to give you a better insight into all things slogan, including how you can create or transform your own into a catchy and effective marketing tool.
- What is a slogan?
So what even is a slogan? Well, according to Entrepreneur.com's small business encyclopedia, a slogan is "a catchphrase or small group of words that are combined in a special way to identify a product or company." Similar to logos, slogans are another way through which you can represent your brand and grab people’s attention in a short and understandable way.
- Why is it important?
With a slogan, you’re trying to sell yourself and your product in just a few words, as well as making a lasting and desirable impression. Slogans are intended to leave the brand’s key message in potential customers’ mind. If they don’t remember anything else about an advertisement or post, if your slogan is catchy and well conveyed, they’ll remember it.
- What are the key ingredients?
One of the most important things is that you keep it short. No one’s going to take the time to try and memorise a two sentence long description of your business; it’s not going to happen. Making it short, catchy and also memorable will leave it sticking in people’s minds meaning they’ll instantly associate it with your brand.
Furthermore, it’s also very important that your slogan makes the product’s or company’s benefits clear to the potential customer, while also differentiating the brand from market competitors, encouraging customers to believe that your brand is better. In this way, your slogan will leave a lasting and positive impression on the consumer.
- Some useful examples
If you still need slogan inspiration to get those creative juices flowing, here are a few of our favourite company slogans for you to take a look at.
Tesco: "Every Little Helps" – Through this, Tesco manages to convey its message as being a brand for the people. It’s both catchy and able to fit into many of the brand’s messages, for instance regarding value, environmental sustainability, and quality.
Nike: "Just Do It" – With this slogan, Nike goes further than just promoting their brand and products, it promotes a way of thinking. Their catchy and succinct slogan is very effective as it encourages customers that they don’t need to be a top athlete to achieve their dreams or reach their fitness goals, for example, you can just do it. Associating the brand with this positive method urges people to view Nike in an equally positive light, making consumers more inclined to purchase their products.
